Upsets are Becoming a Theme in 2025 Wimbledon

The men’s singles division of the 2025 Wimbledon has produced several surprises in the first round, with a record of 13 seeded players having already fallen, disrupting the Wimbledon 2025 odds. This ties the 2004 Australian Open for most at a Grand Slam tournament. The previous Wimbledon record for the most seeded players to lose in the men’s singles first round was 11 (in 2001, 2003, 2018, and 2021).

Alexander Zverev is the highest seed to fall in the first round, as the German international lost on Tuesday in five sets to Arthur Rinderknech, and the result further widened the gap between him and second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz and first-seeded Jannik Sinner in the ATP rankings. Seventh-seeded Lorenzo Musetti also lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in four sets, while ninth-seeded Daniil Medvedev tumbled out in four sets against French journeyman Benjamin Bonzi.

Today, let’s recap these Wimbledon 2025 results, courtesy of SBOTOP.

Zverev mentally crashed out in the opening round

Alexander Zverev said he’ll need therapy following his 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 defeat against Arthur Rinderknech in a match that lasted nearly five hours. This is the first time since the 2019 Wimbledon that he has exited this early in a Grand Slam.

“I’ve never felt this empty before. Just lacking joy, just lacking joy in everything that I do,” Zverev said in his post-match press conference. “It’s not necessarily about tennis. Just lacking joy outside of tennis, as well.”

“I don’t think tennis is the problem right now for me,” he added. “It’s something else that I have to find within me at the moment. But something within me has to change, which is not necessarily on the tennis court. Maybe for the first time in my life, I’ll probably need it (therapy).”

Zverev never found a way to break Rinderknech’s serve (0/9 break points). He hit his breaking point at 1-1 in the fifth set, as he dropped serve despite having a 40/0 lead in that game, and that opened an opportunity for Rinderknech to charge towards the biggest victory of his career.

Six months ago, Zverev made a deep run in the Australian Open, losing to Jannik Sinner in the final. But since then, he hit a rough patch and never fully recovered.

Medvedev in foul mood after opening round defeat

Daniil Medvedev was so furious following his 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 loss to Benjamin Bonzi that he angrily battered his racquets into his chair and his bag, as Bonzi, who has never been beyond the third round of a Grand Slam, celebrated the biggest win of his career. Last Monday marked Medvedev’s second consecutive first-round Grand Slam exit after losing his Roland Garros opener against Cameron Norrie last May.

Unlike Zverev, Medvedev is not dwelling too much on the negatives against Bonzi, as he said he plans to build off his success at Halle, where he advanced to the Terra Wortmann Open championship match before losing to Alexander Bublik in two sets.

“I would be very worried if not for the Halle tournament, where I played well and managed to be in the final, playing a great level,” Medvedev said. “That’s why I can compare today’s match to this tournament. I feel like I didn’t play much worse.”

Bonzi struck cleanly from the baseline and was solid with his serve, which proved to be pivotal in the first and third set tie-breaks. The Frenchman needed three hours and seven minutes to earn his second career Top 10 victory.

Musetti makes honest admission after first-round loss

Lorenzo Musetti became the latest top seed to lose in the first round at Wimbledon, as he was humbled by Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 yesterday. This defeat puts a massive dent in his ATP Finals aspirations.

The Italian recorded a tour-leading 12 wins on grass in 2024, but arrived in London having missed the grass tune-up season due to a left adductor injury sustained in his French Open semi-finals loss to Carlos Alcaraz. The lack of conditioning was evident for Musetti, as he looked uncomfortable competing in Court No. 2 under the sweltering heat. Basilashvili hit 15 aces among his 48 winners in the two-hour, 25-minute triumph.

“I was struggling to feel comfortable on the court from the beginning,” Musetti admitted. “Going and going with the match, I was really losing focus and was not reactive on the ball when I was coming out from the serve. Even in the lateral movements, which normally I know how to move, today seems like I never played on this surface. A really bad performance, I would say.”
