Iga Swiatek seems on her way to winning her fourth consecutive French Open title (and fifth overall). The Polish has breezed past the competition, and the French Open 2025 odds make her the prohibitive favorite to win it all again at Roland Garros.
However, Swiatek will face stiff competition for the Grand Slam, as world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and last year’s finalist Jasmine Paolini are still well and alive in the tournament. Like Swiatek, Sabalenka is humming along in the tournament, while Paolini overcame a brief scare in the first round before eventually advancing to the fourth round.
Elsewhere, Lois Boisson and Elsa Jacquemot will meet in a rare all-French third round tie to give the home fans something to cheer about.

Paolini on a major roll
Jasmine Paolini stretched her career-best winning streak to nine matches after beating lucky loser Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-4, 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier last Friday. Last year’s French Open runner-up only needed one hour and nine minutes to dispatch her Ukrainian counterpart. Paolini is in the Round of 16 for the fifth time in her last six Grand Slams.
The first four games went against serve with Paolini twice down an early break before hitting 2-2. Eventually, Paolini’s forehand helped her make sure she never lost serve in the first set again. At 5-4, Paolini outhustled Starodubtseva in an intense rally to take the opening set. The second set was easier for Paolini.
Before stringing three consecutive victories at Roland Garros, Paolini won her first singles title of the season in the Italian Open two weeks ago, beating Coco Gauff in the final. The 29-year-old became the first Italian woman in 40 years to win the WTA 1000 event.
Paolini had never made a Grand Slam Round of 16 until last year, but she has picked up wins at majors since the start of 2024. Only Aryna Sabalenka (27) has won more Grand Slam main-draw singles matches than Paolini (23) over the last two years. Paolini is also now the first Italian woman to reach consecutive Rounds of 16 at Roland Garros since her doubles partner Sara Errani made four in a row between 2012 and 2015.
Swiatek is becoming the Queen of Clay

Iga Swiatek extended her Roland Garros winning streak to 24 matches after a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jaqueline Cristian last Friday. The Polish international has now reached the Round of 16 for the seventh straight year.
After getting through the first set without facing a break point, Swiatek saved all six she faced in the second set and denied Cristian a game point for the second-set tiebreak before breaking serve to win the match. The match lasted nearly two hours, as Cristian put up a fight in the second set. However, the Morocco Open finalist eventually ran out of gas. Swiatek admitted postgame that she felt a sense of relief after the match.
Overall, Swiatek now boasts a 38-2 record at Roland Garros, tying Chris Evert for the most main-draw victories at the Grand Slam. She is also the sixth player to advance to the Round of 16 in her first seven Roland Garros appearances in the Open Era after Evert, Martina Navratilova, Gabriela Sabatini, Conchita Martinez, and Monica Seles.
The Pole can tie Seles for the second-longest winning streak at the French Open in the Open Era at 25 by beating world No. 12 Elena Rybakina, who is fresh from a 6-2, 6-2 win over 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko.
Sabalenka looking dominant as usual
Aryna Sabalenka is also through the Round of 16 after dispatching Olga Danilovic 6-2, 6-3 last Friday. This was her 50th Grand Slam victory since the start of 2023. She is arguably the most in-form player right now, as 32 of her 37 wins this year have come in straight sets, and she has only dropped 10 games in four matches.
Sabalenka raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before Danilovic pumped the brakes. Danilovic held for 5-1 and broke Sabalenka’s serve to make it 5-2, but Sabalenka rallied from 40-15 down in the next game, and Danilovic’s double fault gave Sabalenka the set point. The second set was slightly more competitive, but Sabalenka was just too good for Danilovic.
Sabalenka has already won three titles this year – Brisbane, Miami, and Madrid – and has reached six finals. She’ll remain No. 1 in the WTA rankings regardless of what happens in the next few days.
