Women’s Euro 2025: England’s Title Defence is in Grave Danger

England vs Netherlands

England may not be the reigning champions for long if they don’t get their act together as soon as possible in the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament. Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses are coming off a 2-1 loss against France, and they found themselves at the bottom of Group D without a point alongside Wales, putting them in a must-win situation when they face the Netherlands this Wednesday evening at Letzigrund.

On the other hand, the Netherlands are at the top of the group following their 3-0 shutout victory over Wales. Andries Jonker’s group can seal their spot in the knockout rounds with a game to spare if they take care of business against the Lionesses.

Despite the contrasting forms of these two sides, the pregame SBOTOP betting odds expect England to see this through, which should motivate the Netherlands to lay down a marker this week.

Learn more about these two teams in today’s preview.

Talking Points

England could be tempted to mix it up

Sarina Wiegman suffered her first career Euros loss during England’s 2-1 defeat against France. Alessia Russo’s early effort was ruled out for offside, and the Lionesses never recovered, as they conceded quickfire goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore between the 36th and 39th minutes. Keira Walsh pulled one back for England, but it was a little too late.

Wiegman could make changes to the side that failed to score the three points. Niamh Charles could take Jess Carter’s starting left-back spot, and Grace Clinton could claim Georgia Stanway’s spot in the middle of the park alongside Walsh. Wiegman could also consider starting Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly, who came off the bench to replace Lauren James and Beth Mead. Maya Le Tissier, Esme Morgan, Aggie Beever-Jones, and Jess Park didn’t even get the chance to play against France, and they could play a role against the Oranje.

Alessia Russo is probably the only untouchable in the starting XI because of her goal threat. The Arsenal forward already has 23 goals in 52 caps for the Lionesses.

Miedema is in fine form for Netherlands

Vivianne Miedema hit a historic milestone during the Netherlands’ 3-0 thrashing of Wales last Saturday. The Manchester City forward recorded her 100th international goal in first-half stoppage time to put the Oranje ahead for good, and teammates Victoria Pelova and Esmee Brugts followed suit with a goal each in the opening stages of the second half.

The Netherlands have now registered their fifth win in seven internationals and their first clean sheet since they blasted Indonesia 15-0 in a friendly last October 2024. As for Miedema, she has netted three goals in her past two international appearances.

Head coach Andries Jonker will likely stick to the same starting XI he had against Wales. The Oranje squad is also stacked like England, as many of their stars ply their trade in the Women’s Super League. The Netherlands’ collective experience should play a role in this tournament.

History

England and the Netherlands are the past two champions in the Women’s Euros, with the former winning it in 2022 and the latter winning it in 2017. England also finished fourth in 1987 and 2017, third in 1995, and second in 2009. The Netherlands also finished third in 2009.

England can take solace from the fact that they have won three of their last four meetings against the Netherlands. These two proud nations last met in the 2023-24 Women’s Nations League Group A1, where the former won 3-2 last December 2023.

Despite having 12 points each, the Netherlands advanced to the finals due to a superior goal difference (+8 vs. +7). The Oranje eventually settled for fourth place after losing 3-0 to Spain in the semi-finals and 2-0 to Germany in the third-place match.

Betting Tip

As mentioned, England are favoured by the Women’s Euro 2025 odds to secure a much-needed win against the Netherlands this Wednesday night. The Lionesses are priced at 1.65, while the Oranje are 4.15 underdogs, and a draw is at 3.41 in the 1X2 market.

England will be determined to right their wrongs and will create numerous Women’s Euro 2025 highlights to beat the Netherlands. Besides our recommended bet, bettors can also go for other options such as Over 2.50 at 1.80, Over 2.75 at 2.03, and Total Goal 2-3 at 1.93, with Total Goal 4-6 at 3.00 as the bolder option. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 3-2 in favour of England – the result of their most recent encounter – could yield a 25.00 payday.
