Serie A: Milan and Fiorentina Out to Revive European Hopes

AC Milan vs Fiorentina

Besides the Scudetto race, the battle for European spots is also heating up in Serie A. And we have a cracker of a match at San Siro this Saturday night, as AC Milan host Fiorentina for another fun contest.

Fiorentina are eighth in the Italian top-flight standings with 51 points. Raffaele Palladino’s side has won three of their last four matches, and winning this road game could see them go as high as sixth place.

AC Milan are ninth in the table with 47 points. After a two-game winning streak in the league, the Rossoneri lost their last Serie A match against Napoli (2-1). However, Sergio Conceicao’s men held Inter Milan 1-1 in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tie last night, giving them some confidence.

This is a huge match for both teams since we’re approaching the final eight matchdays of the 2024-25 campaign.

Talking Points

Maignan a wanted man at AC Milan

AC Milan have been inconsistent this season on both sides of the pitch. However, the one reliable constant they’ve had all season is their first-choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Maignan was named Man of the Match in last night’s Coppa Italia contest against Inter Milan, reminding us why he’s one of the most underrated players in the world. Save for Hakan Calhanoglu’s second-half goal where his field of vision was blocked by two players and the shot took a slight deflection, Maignan was a steady presence at the back for the Rossoneri.

The 29-year-old made several outstanding saves including Nicola Zalewski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s late attempts for the matchwinner. If one of those shots went in, AC Milan would’ve been in a worse position.

Maignan, joint-third in Serie A clean sheets this year (10), will enter the final 12 months of his contract with the Rossoneri, so rival clubs are circling in. Manchester United, who are reportedly looking for a potential Andre Onana replacement, are reportedly one of the Frenchman’s suitors. The cash-strapped Red Devils have to pay up for Maignan, but AC Milan have shown no indications of planning to sell their goalie anytime soon.

Kean hits Fiorentina scoring milestone

Moise Kean was the hero against an upwardly mobile Atalanta squad last weekend. He scored the marginal goal for La Viola by picking the ball from Isak Hien and slotting the ball past Marco Carnesecchi into the low corner.

The 25-year-old striker improved his total to 16 league goals this season – good for second in the Capocannoniere race. Kean also became the first Italian international to surpass 15 Serie A goals with the La Viola shirt since Giuseppe Rossi in 2013-14.

Kean trails six goals behind Azzurri teammate Mateo Retegui, but we still have eight matchdays left in the 2024-25 campaign. Either way, Kean has become a fan-favourite in Florence and can still give more to his club, assuming the front office doesn’t sell him this summer.

History

AC Milan and Fiorentina have already faced off this season. Fiorentina won 2-1 at the Artemio Franchi Stadium. Yacine Adli drew first blood in the 35th minute, but Christian Pulisic recorded the equaliser 25 minutes later. Albert Gudmundsson scored the winning goal in the 73rd minute, and the Rossoneri were reduced to 10 men when Theo Hernandez was sent off in stoppage time. David de Gea was one of the best performers in the contest, as he saved two penalties to help seal the victory. Fiorentina can complete their first season sweep of AC Milan since 2000-01.

The Rossoneri have won each of their last four home league matches against La Viola in Serie A. They can extend their home winning streak to at least five against Fiorentina for the first time since a run between 1948 and 1955 (W8).

Betting Tip

The Serie A 2025 odds back AC Milan to take the three points against Fiorentina. The Rossoneri are at 1.90 odds, while La Viola are priced at 3.62 to win, and a draw is at 3.36 in the 1X2 market. The gap between these two sides is not that big, making choosing the winner harder than it seems.

However, we’re sure SBOTOP football fans will get their fair share of Serie A 2025 highlights this weekend. Besides our recommended bet, bettors can also go for options like Over 2.50 at 1.75 and Over 2.75 at 1.99. Meanwhile, a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of La Viola – the result of the reverse fixture – will give you a 13.00 payday.
