Burnley vs Liverpool
Premier League leaders Liverpool are back in action on Sunday when they head down the East Lancs Road to take on Scott Parker’s Burnley.
Arne Slot’s team stands alone on nine points. But with Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham all playing on Saturday, by the time this game kicks off at 2 pm, the Reds could be down to fourth or fifth, even if Everton can give Aston Villa a mauling.
Liverpool have spent an eye-watering amount of cash over the summer, and there will certainly be a collection of the new names on show at Turf Moor, while Burnley, who have strengthened themselves since their return to the top-flight, will hope to add to their three points collected so far.
And there’s an interesting subplot to add into the mix with Michael Oliver refereeing the Reds for the first time since the Merseyside Derby last year, when Everton scored a 98th-minute equaliser, after the allocated extra time had expired, leading to angry scenes at the final whistle.
Oliver will hope for a quieter afternoon on Sunday, but I wouldn’t count on it.
Talking Points
Parker’s pragmatism suits the Clarets
Two years ago, Burnley were promoted under Vincent Kompany and crashed and burned. The 2023 summer transfer window saw a £100 million spend on young stars, mainly wingers, who had sell-on value and no Premier League experience, and look what happened.
In his still young career, Parker himself has had two failed tilts at the Premier League, one with Fulham and a second with Bournemouth, which lasted just four games. Back in 2022, a 9-0 defeat to Liverpool led to his departure from the Cherries, and so Parker is battle-hardened, and his honest and humble style suits Burnley to a tee.
The Clarets have recruited well in the summer, bringing in proven top-flight experience, including six-time Premier League winner Kyle Walker, who has already shown his leadership skills in this young squad. Martin Dubravka has taken over between the sticks, following the departure of James Trafford to Manchester City. Former Manchester United centre-back Axel Tuanzebe is nearing fitness, while two recruits from Chelsea have excited the Clarets fans. 21-year-old midfield ace Lesley Ugochukwu has already impressed, while Albanian striker Armando Broja could play some part on Sunday.
All these recruits are six-footers with pace, and that is exactly what any team hoping to survive in the toughest league on the planet must have. And look out for striker Lyle Foster, who has been supremely impressive so far, another big and fast player who has scored one and had two goals harshly disallowed by VAR.
Isak is ready to play football again

One man will take a big chunk of the pre-match Premier League 2025 news, and that is the Reds’ latest signing, Alexander Isak, who finally completed his move from the Magpies on transfer deadline day, costing a British record of £125 million. The Swedish striker withdrew his labour throughout the summer, not training with his teammates for 14 weeks, so he left Tyneside under something of a cloud. But Isak was all smiles on tour with Sweden this week, and he might well be in the frame for a squad place to face Burnley.
There is a lot of excitement around Anfield at the moment, with another £100 million plus signing, Florian Wirtz, and £70 million Hugo Ekitike ready to face the Clarets. But Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah has defended his departed teammates this week after suggestions that Slot has upgraded in the summer, the Egyptian has posted on social media: “How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the Premier League champions.”
While they have won three from three in the league, the Reds have been riding their luck to some degree, scoring late winners in all three matches, but they certainly have the firepower to give Burnley a hard time.
History
Liverpool have won 14 of their last 19 meetings with Burnley, drawing two and losing three, and the Reds did the double over the Clarets in the 2023-24 season, winning 2-0 at Turf Moor before triumphing 3-1 at Anfield. And the latest Premier League 2025 betting odds reckon another Red victory is on the way.
In terms of recent form, Liverpool have won three and drawn one in four competitive matches this season, while Burnley have won two and lost two.
Betting Tip
Burnley fans can get SBOTOP odds of 8.75 to cause a huge upset with Liverpool at 1.44 and the draw at 5.10.
I can see goals in this game, with both teams scoring and conceding freely so far. For a correct score, I’m drawn to a 3-2 win for the Reds at odds of 18.88.
