Champions League: Can Brugge Be the First to Frustrate Bayern?

Bayern Munich are aiming to make it three wins from three when they entertain Club Brugge at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. 

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern have also started to pull clear in the race for the Bundesliga, in fact they have a 100 per cent record in all competitions this season and it would be a major shock if Wednesday’s clash, Champions League: Bayern Munich vs Club Brugge, bucked that trend. Nicky Hayen’s Belgians are a side to be taken seriously though; they kicked off their European conquest with a superb 4-1 over AS Monaco but then fell to a 2-1 loss to Atalanta on Matchday Two.

Meanwhile Die Bayern scored an impressive 3-1 win over Chelsea before slapping Pafos 5-1 in Cyprus. This opponent will be nearer Chelsea than Pafos in terms of quality, but Brugge know how big their task in Munich will be. Talking Points

Bayern’s Premier quality

There’s a rather English feel to Bayern Munich’s success at the moment. Manager Kompany was a playing legend at Manchester City before managing Burnley to promotion to, and relegation from, the Premier League. And the men doing the business on the pitch have all transferred from the English top flight, in 2023, 2024 and 2025. 

In Harry Kane, the Bavarians have a striker who can beat any defence and any keeper on the planet, as he shows time and time again. The England star has scored in ten of Bayern’s 11 matches this season, piling up a remarkable 19 goals and four already in the Champions League. Since his transfer from Spurs in 2023, Kane has scored over 100 goals for Die Bayern and he notched in his team’s Der Klassiker win over Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.

2024 arrival Michael Olise was also on target against Die Schwarzgelben, a win which took Bayern five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table; and the former Crystal Palace winger is going from strength to strength in Bavaria. And the big 2025 signing Luis Diaz has set off like a train, scoring five goals to put him behind Kane in the race for the Golden Boot. Olise is in joint fourth place with four goals by the way. This is a multi-faceted attack from which there is no hiding place. 

The only note of concern for Kompany, in the run up to this game, is the fitness of defender Josip Stanisic who missed the win over Dortmund and is in a race to be fit for the visit of Brugge.  

 

Brugge’s biggest test

Club Brugge are going nicely in the Belgium first division table, second to Union Saint-Gilloise, a team they beat in a six pointer just before the international break. And they come into this clash on the back of a tight 1-0 win over Leuven on Saturday.

No doubt the Bayern Munich vs Club Brugge highlights will feature an attack versus defence bout as we expect the hosts to dominate. The Belgian back four, marshalled by experienced Brugge stalwart Brandon Mechele, and with talented young Ecuadorian centre back Joel Ordonez alongside, will face as stiff a test as they are likely to experience this season. If they can somehow keep Bayern’s stellar strike force at bay and get the ball up to the other end of the pitch then the Belgians will look for ex Fortuna Dusseldorf forward Christos Tzolis. The 23 year old Greek international can play as a winger, a number ten or he can lead the line and, with seven goals this season he is Brugge’s most potent threat.           

 

History

Bayern and Brugge last met in 2005 when the Bavarians ran out winners by the only goal in the game, and the previous encounter ended in a 1-1 draw. 

With four wins, one draw and one defeat from their last six games Club Brugge are in decent shape but they meet a club which is sweeping all-comers aside right now.  Add into the mix that Bayern have lost only one of their ten matches against Belgian opposition, they are unbeaten in their last 35 home Champions League group matches, and that Brugge have won only one of 16 away games to German opposition…the omens are not good for the visitors.  

 

Betting Tip
