Premier League: Liverpool Crave a Stamford Bridge Pick-Me-Up

Chelsea vs Liverpool

Liverpool will be keen to avoid a third consecutive loss on Saturday when they travel to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea in their next Premier League match. Arne Slot’s Reds are coming off back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace (2-1) and Galatasaray (1-0) in the Champions League.

Their recent setback against Crystal Palace was their first league loss of this season. As a result, Liverpool are stuck at 15 points, but they remain at the top of the pile. However, if they lose to Chelsea this weekend, then there’s a huge chance we could see a new team at the summit at the end of this week.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are seven notches below Liverpool with eight points. After a bright start to the campaign, Enzo Maresca’s side are winless in their last three league matches. The Blues secured a much-needed 1-0 win against Benfica yesterday, giving them some momentum ahead of the Reds’ visit.

Talking Points

Chelsea must step up sans Palmer and Adarabioyo

Cole Palmer is set to miss Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Liverpool due to a groin injury
Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer leaves the pitch after being substituted against Manchester United in the Premier League

Cole Palmer’s nagging groin injury resurfaced during Chelsea’s 2-1 loss against Manchester United, and the 23-year-old midfielder had to leave the pitch in the first half. After careful consideration, head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed that Palmer will rest up to three weeks, which means he will be sidelined until after the October international break. Besides Palmer, Chelsea also rested Tosin Adarabioyo due to a calf injury.

Since Palmer and Adarabioyo were sidelined, Chelsea have been subpar on both ends of the pitch. Since the Manchester United defeat, the Blues have scored only one goal apiece against Brighton and Benfica while conceding three against the Seagulls.

To make matters worse, Chelsea will also miss the services of Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana for different reasons. Chalobah must serve a one-match ban after receiving a red card against Brighton last Saturday, while Fofana is still under concussion protocol after sustaining a head knock in their EFL Cup win over Lincoln City.

Jorrel Hato and Benoit Badiashile will likely replace Chalobah and Fofana, while Joao Pedro will shoulder a heavier load on the offensive end in place of Palmer’s absence.

Fitness issues creeping up on Liverpool

Liverpool’s defeat against Galatasaray seemingly cost them more than just three points in their pursuit of Champions League success this season, as Alisson Becker injured his hamstring and will likely be out until after the international break.

After conceding the penalty to Victor Osimhen in the first half, the Reds made a concerted effort to prevent a second goal. In the 54th minute, Alisson had a beautiful save of Osimhen’s shot after an errant back pass from Ibrahima Konate. The Brazilian goalkeeper called for a substitution after that and was replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa are additional fitness concerns for Liverpool supporters. Ekitike started against Galatasaray but had to be taken off in the 68th minute due to an apparent leg injury, while Chiesa was not even on the matchday squad in Istanbul.

History

Liverpool are winless in their last four Premier League games against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (D3, L1), including a 3-1 defeat last May. If they lose this weekend, the Reds could suffer back-to-back Premier League away losses against the Blues for the first time since losing three on the bounce from 2004-05 to 2006-07.

However, Chelsea have lost four of their last five Premier League home matches against the reigning champions (D1, L4), after having gone undefeated at Stamford Bridge between 2002-03 and 2019-20 (W7, D6). The Blues have suffered consecutive Premier League losses for just a third time under Enzo Maresca. They haven’t lost three in a row since losing four on the bounce in April to May 2023 under Frank Lampard.

Betting Tip

The Premier League 2025 odds expect an all-out battle between Chelsea and Liverpool, sensing that these two sides badly need a win this Saturday. Liverpool have the slight edge at 2.36, while Chelsea aren’t far behind at 2.62, and a draw is at 3.36 in the 1X2 market.

As things stand, Liverpool have the deeper team, so they should claim three points, though any victory will likely be by a small margin. Football fans at Stamford Bridge will also get their share of Premier League 2025 highlights, so SBOTOP bettors can also add Over 2.75 at 1.71 and Total Goals 2-3 at 2.13 to the parlay. Moreover, a Correct Score of 3-1 in favour of the Blues – the result of their last league encounter – is a long shot at 21.00.
