Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur
After a sensational opening round of Premier League matches we’re set to go again; and the pick of the next set of fixtures sees Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City host Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.
The Sky Blues destroyed Wolverhampton Wanderers last week while Spurs saw off Burnley in some style, but Premier League: Manchester City vs Spurs presents a bigger challenge for both sets of players. Last season Guardiola’s men were strangely off colour and they finished third in the table while Europa League winners Spurs ended up in 17th.
Right now the Sky Blues are top of the table. Nobody really cares where any club sits after one game but the manner of City’s win over Wolves was quite telling, and the SBOTOP odds say there is little to choose between the three main contenders for the title, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. Frank’s team is currently sixth favourite and the Londoners already look a different, more vibrant prospect under the former Brentford boss; but my feeling is that the Sky Blues are still some way ahead of the Londoners; and the Manchester City vs Spurs betting odds agree with me!
Talking Points
City new boys are so slick
Few pundits, certainly in the UK, have been talking about Manchester City as likely champions but, my word; they certainly looked more than capable on Saturday as they swept Wolves away in devastating style. During Guardiola’s trophy-littered reign at Manchester City he has added players incrementally and introduced them carefully, with new recruits emerging alongside the very best academy players. But last season it seemed the squad had suddenly aged and a significant refresh was required in January, with Omar Marmoush being one of a number of players to arrive.
Fast forward to summer and Guardiola has invested again with four eye-catching signings. Attacking midfielder Tijjani Reijnders arrived in a £46m move from AC Milan and he was followed by two more creative players, Rayan Ait Nouri from Wolves and Rayan Cherki from Olympique Lyonnais. City also moved to bring keeper James Trafford back to the club in a £31m switch from Burnley where he was part of the Clarets’ record breaking defence last season.
The 22-year-old stopper started against Wolves, as did Reijdners and Ait Nouri, and he kept a clean sheet with three saves to make, but it was Dutch master Reijdners who hit the headlines with a brilliant display. He was instrumental in the opening goal, using quick feet and then delivering a sublime ball over to Rico Lewis who squared for Erling Haaland to score. Reijnders then fired in a beauty of his own for the second goal and he set up Haaland’s second, before Cherki climbed off the bench to make it 4-0.
So far so good for the new Sky Blues.
Richarlison’s fast start
Tottenham’s home match against Burnley was a handy opening for Frank, to get a newly promoted club at home is as kind as it can get and, while the Clarets gave Spurs plenty to think about, unleashing 14 shots on the hosts’ goal, two moments of brilliance from Brazil striker Richarlison took the game away from the visitors.

Spurs’ marquee Summer signing Mohammed Kudus was the provider of both goals, pulling back a ball which Richarlison hit first time into the corner with just ten minutes on the clock. The second was a thing of beauty; as he met a Kudus cross with a spectacular overhead kick which gave Burnley keeper Martn Dubravka no chance. Last season’s top scorer Brennan Johnson finished cleverly for the third goal to give Spurs a slightly flattering 3-0 score-line.
Richarlison’s double means he’s already reached half his tally of 2025/26 and the 28-year-old looked razor sharp in this opener. Maybe this will be his best campaign at Spurs so far… though the bar isn’t all that high. After scoring 43 in four campaigns at Everton where his goals kept the Toffees in the Premier League he switched to Tottenham in 2022 in a £60m deal (including add-ons). But 18 goals in three seasons in North London has been a modest return on that investment and Richarlison will be keen to put things right this season.
At the other end of the pitch Micky van de Ven was imperious at the heart of defence, snuffing out all that Burnley could throw at Spurs, using his pace and positioning to great effect. If Tottenham can continue to get it right at the business ends of the pitch then sixth place will not be out of reach.
History
The head-to-head Manchester City vs Spurs results tell a story of two great clubs going toe to toe over many years and, after 174 meetings the score stands at 69 wins to 68 in favour of the Citizens.
Tottenham have won only twice in their last nine visits to the Etihad Stadium but the last one, in November last year, was a thumping 4-0 victory as James Maddison scored a double. Sadly, for Spurs, the England man is still injured but, in any case, we won’t see a repeat of that score on Saturday.
Betting Tip
The Sky Blues are hot favourites at odds of 1.44 to win with the draw at 4.75 and a Spurs win is at 6.62. I expect City to win and I think there will be plenty of goals.
