British Grand Prix: Ferrari Crave for Hamilton Magic in Silverstone

The British Grand Prix has been a happy hunting ground for Lewis Hamilton during his time with Mercedes, and he hopes to recreate his winning formula with Ferrari. The Scuderia badly need a vintage performance from the 40-year-old driver to make a push in the constructors’ championship. Ferrari are second in the standings with 210 points, 207 points behind frontrunners McLaren.

McLaren are still on top as their two drivers continue to go head-to-head for the drivers’ championship. Lando Norris won last week’s Austrian Grand Prix and is only trailing by 15 points behind Papaya teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished second, and Charles Leclerc was P3.

Max Verstappen suffered his first DNF of the season, although he remains third in the championship with 155 points. It is becoming unlikely he’ll successfully defend his title, casting doubt on his long-term future with Red Bull.

Home is where the heart is for Hamilton

Ferrari are coming off their best collective outing of the 2025 campaign so far, as Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished third and fourth in the Austrian Grand Prix, and Hamilton believes they can build off it.

When Hamilton raced in Silverstone last year, he was able to beat the faster McLarens on a rainy day. Since then, he has only had three podium finishes in the next 23 races, so he’s determined to win another one in front of his home crowd.

“I’m just hoping for a strong weekend. I’ve not had a podium yet, this would be a really special place in order to have that so I’m really counting on the amazing support we have here to hopefully make the difference,” Hamilton told reporters.

After a rough patch to start the year, the Scuderia have shown steady improvement, with Leclerc benefitting via three P3 outings in Saudi Arabia, Spain, and Austria. Hamilton praised the impact of Ferrari’s latest upgrades to the SF-25.

The two drivers also deserve credit for executing the “lifting and coasting” strategy well at the end of the straights to protect the skid blocks from excessive wear, an issue that cost them in the Chinese Grand Prix.

Are Mercedes planning a major shakeup?

Speculation has mounted for some time over Russell’s future at Mercedes since his contract expires at the end of 2025, as the Silver Arrows are reportedly interested in prying Max Verstappen away from Red Bull. Verstappen is tight-lipped on the matter, and Russell remains confident he’ll race with Mercedes next year.

For now, Russell will focus on aiming to win more races. He is coming off a P5 outing at the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend.

On the other hand, teammate Kimi Antonelli aims to bounce back after suffering a DNF at Red Bull Ring following his unfortunate collision with Max Verstappen on the opening lap. Like Russell, Antonelli is not too worried about the prospect of losing his Mercedes seat to Verstappen.

History

Lewis Hamilton is the winningest driver in the history of the British Grand Prix, with nine wins, including a four-peat from 2014 to 2017 and a three-peat from 2019 to 2021. The seven-time world champion has also won the most pole positions at this track with seven.

Carlos Sainz Jr. and Max Verstappen won in 2022 and 2023, but Hamilton won again last year in his swansong with Mercedes. Fernando Alonso is the only active driver besides Hamilton who has won at least twice at Silverstone (2006 and 2011).

The British Grand Prix is the oldest race in the Formula 1 World Championship calendar, as the 1950 edition was round one of the first championship season in 1950. This event is due to take place at the Silverstone circuit until at least 2034.

What are the odds?

Of course, the SBOTOP British Grand Prix 2025 odds expect another eventful weekend for the Papayas, as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are both priced at 2.50 to win on Sunday’s race. Barring another race incident, Max Verstappen is poised to take the third podium spot at 4.50 odds, with George Russell (11.00), Lewis Hamilton (16.00), and Charles Leclerc (17.00) being the distant challengers.

With Piastri and Norris leading the way, McLaren are 1.40 favourites to emerge as the winning team, with Red Bull (4.50), Ferrari (8.50), and Mercedes (10.00) in second, third, and fourth. Meanwhile, RB have the fifth-best odds at 101.00, taking into consideration Liam Lawson’s surprising P6 finish at Red Bull Ring last time out. Williams, at 151.00 odds, have some catching up to do after their racers didn’t finish in Austria.
