Italian Open: Sinner is Finding His Feet in Rome

Jannik Sinner is back after serving his doping ban and is making waves in the 2025 Italian Open. The 23-year-old Italian international, who won the Australian Open last January before being slapped with a three-month suspension, hasn’t skipped a beat and is through to the quarter-finals.

Sinner remains the top-seeded player in the ATP rankings (by a large margin) despite missing three months’ worth of action, and the Italian Open 2025 odds have him as one of the prohibitive favourites to win the ATP 1000 event.

Fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti is also through to the quarter-finals, giving the home fans more reason to cheer. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz overcame several tough challenges in the previous round to make it this far.

If you missed the men’s singles tennis action in Rome, worry not, as SBOTOP has you covered with the latest Italian Open 2025 updates.

Sinner moves through gears to reach quarter-finals

After breezing past Mariano Navone and Jesper De Jong in his first two matches in Rome, Sinner was put to the test by Francisco Cerundolo, who knocked him out in the Round of 16 the last time he played here in 2023 before he was him.

Sinner earned a 7-6(2), 6-3 victory over Cerundolo in a match that was delayed by several hours due to a torrential downpour. The Italian needed one hour and 17 minutes to claim the opening set before converting his fourth match point in the second to book his ticket to the next round.

Sinner saved six of his eight break points, but the match wasn’t as smooth as expected. He dropped serve at 5-1 and let slip two match points on return in the ensuing game and was then forced to save two break points in the final game, which lasted eight minutes.

Once he prevailed in the tie-break, Sinner built an unassailable lead by winning four consecutive games in the second set and never looked back.

By extending his winning streak to 24 matches, Sinner joined Filippo Volandri as the only Italian men to reach multiple Italian Open quarter-finals this century. The world No. 1 will next face Madrid Open titlist Casper Ruud or Jaume Munar in the quarter-finals.

Musetti continues to climb up

Lorenzo Musetti has been one of the top risers in the ATP rankings this year. The 23-year-old Italian has moved to ninth after qualifying for the semi-finals in two of his last three tournaments, including a finals appearance in the Monte-Carlo Masters last month, losing to Carlos Alcaraz in three sets.

He earned one of the most unique victories of his career last Tuesday, overcoming Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-4, and a two-hour, 52-minute rain delay to book his ticket to the next round. The Italian international was on the brink of victory at 7-5, 5-4, 30/30 before the rain poured. As fans searched for cover, Musetti and Medvedev continued for one more point, which the Italian won via a drop shot.

However, the chair umpire suspended play due to the wet court conditions with Musetti at match point. It took them nearly three hours to continue playing, and Musetti immediately won the one point he needed by firing a forehand winner.

Musetti has now won 21 of his past 25 matches on clay courts. He is the first Italian in history to play at least all three clay-court Masters 1000 quarter-finals in the same season and joins Jannik Sinner to become the first two Italians to reach the quarter-finals in Rome in the same year since 1984.

A bigger test awaits Musetti, as he will face defending champion Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. Zverev is fresh from a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory over Arthur Fils.

Alcaraz set up huge quarter-final clash

Carlos Alcaraz registered a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Karen Khachanov to book his ticket to the quarter-finals and set up a blockbuster clash with Jack Draper – the winner of this season’s Indian Wells Masters.

Alcaraz dropped serve in the opening game of the match, as Khachanov was solid from the baseline. However, after a sluggish start, Alcaraz reeled off five straight games and eventually pulled off three winners to break for 3-2 in the second set.

Khachanov forced a third set by taking advantage of Alcaraz’s lapses, winning four straight games to force a third set. Alcaraz raced to a 4-1 lead in the third set but again stuttered against Khachanov before rediscovering his touch, decisively breaking Khachanov’s serve in the 12th game to seal the win.
