Serie A: Turin Test for Izaghi’s Inter

Torino vs Inter Milan

Simone Inzaghi’s title chasers head to the Olimpico di Torino on Sunday for a top-flight showdown in the run-in to a potentially thrilling Scudetto climax.

2023 title winners Napoli are in pole position to take the Serie A crown with just three games to go, with only I Nerazzurri in a position to stop them, three points behind in second and six ahead of Atalanta back in third. Inter face a tricky test against Paulo Vanoli’s Torino, who are sitting casually in mid-table and without any pressure for results.

Il Toro drew at home to Venezia last week to stay in 11th position, while Inter edged out Hellas Verona to keep the heat on Napoli. But then, I Nerazzurri had an epic battle with Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday. It was a fantastic 120 minutes for the fans but a gruelling test for the Inter players who passed with flying colours, but at what cost?

Talking Points

Are Torino already on the beach?

Top-flight footballers are professionals at the height of their game, but they are also human. With three games to play, Serie A 2025 results will not make or break Il Toro’s season. In fact, they sit in a strange position of being miles away from any contest of importance. Torino are a whopping 18 points above the relegation zone and, equally, 18 behind Bologna in seventh place.

Now, this kind of situation can go one of two ways. The players don’t have a particularly big incentive, and they may already have thoughts drifting to a sunbed on a white sandy beach. That sometimes happens and a game against a mid-table side is easier than one against a relegation struggler fighting for its life. But more often than not, we see the mid-table teams playing without pressure and with more freedom, and that makes them more dangerous. In addition, squad players may be given time, and they may well be playing for contracts.

So, this clash spells potential danger for Inter and certainly an unknown. Torino have been strong at home and recently picked up a 1-1 draw away to Lazio. And in Che Adams, they have a lively striker. The former Southampton man has nine goals in the campaign. Midfielder Nikola Vlasic has five goals and four assists, and he scored the levelling penalty to earn a point against Venezia last week, while Adams scored the first in a 2-0 win over Udinese in their previous home game.

Is Inter’s priority now in Europe?

Davide Frattesi scored in Inter Milan's last match before their Serie A battle vs Torino
Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi celebrates after scoring against Barcelona

After beating the Blaugrana to reach the Champions League final, Inter have a great chance of silverware, with Arsenal or PSG to face in the final. But I Nerazzurri’s compelling clash with Barcelona must have taken something out of the players emotionally and physically. They came from behind to level in injury time and then win the tie in extra time, as Davide Frattesi sent the fans at the San Siro into ecstasy.

Inzaghi brought off key men Hakan Calhanoglu and captain Lautaro Martinez after they had both scored, but the likes of Nicolo Barella, Marcus Thuram, and Francesco Acerbi all put in a gruelling 120 minutes.

Back in Serie A, Inter can put some pressure on Napoli who play at home to Genoa on Sunday night, but it is hard to imagine Antonio Conte’s team slipping up then or against Parma or Cagliari on the final day. Whereas Inter face Champions League-chasing Lazio and then visit in-form Como on the final day. The latest Serie A 2025 betting odds certainly back a second Scudetto title in three years for I Partenopei. And this trip to Turin will be no walk in the park for Inzaghi’s men.

History

With 27 wins to five in all competitions since 1993, I Nerazzurri have bossed this relationship, and Inter have won the last five meetings with Il Toro. They also edged the return league match 3-2 at home in October as Thuram helped himself to a hat-trick.

In terms of recent form, Inter have two wins, one draw, and three defeats from their last six games, while Torino have one win, three draws, and two defeats. I Nerazzurri seem to have got over a sticky run of three defeats, and they have a sniff in Turin against a side with a home record of six wins, seven draws, and four defeats.

Betting Tip

Torino are priced at SBOTOP odds of 5.32 to win this game with the Draw at 3.66 and Inter at 1.50. It’s a match the visitors need to win to keep the title race alive, but against a dangerous side with the ultimate freedom, I doubt they will find it easy.
